CESJ SIG BUSINESS MEETING
Thursday, April 16 - 6:15pm-8:15pm @ Marriott - Fifth Level FGH
After a brief report on the SIG’s membership, financials, and activities this year, announcing new officers, and presenting plaques to our award winners, we will focus most of our meeting time on a panel and small group breakout discussions focused on “Standing in Solidarity With Black Lives Matter: The Role of Critical Academics in Challenging Anti-Black Racism.”
With the recent police murders of unarmed Black men and women, the lack of indictment of their perpetrators, and the rising Black Lives Matter movement, CESJ feels it is imperative to bridge this national context to AERA and our discourse as critical scholars. Building on our SIG's Statement of Solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, this panel brings together noted education professors whose work and activism explicitly address issues of anti-Black racism. Sharing their critical analysis, commitments, and approaches to this work, the panelists will guide us through a complex discussion around our role as academics in challenging anti-Black racism in the academy and beyond.
Featured Panelists:
Dr. Bettina Love, University of Georgia
Dr. Django Paris, Michigan State University
Dr. Yolanda Sealey-Ruiz, Teachers College, Columbia
Dr. Leigh Patel, Boston College
Dr. Michael Dumas, University of California-Berkeley
